The Idea Behind SunOnly

The idea for SunOnly was born on Sunday, May 7, 2023, while geocaching in the woods near Regensburg (Bavaria, Germany). The Friday before, I had spent a long time searching for a region where the weather would be good on both Saturday and Sunday—perfect for heading out with the camper to enjoy nature. But it was complicated: in some areas, the weather was only nice on Saturday, in others only on Sunday, or sometimes just in the morning or afternoon.

As I was walking, the idea struck me: how practical it would be to have an app that instantly shows where the weather is good on both days!

On Monday, I researched extensively but couldn’t find any apps or weather sites that offered this feature. Since I had already been interested in AI for a while, I discussed the idea with an AI. The very next day, a simple initial version of the app was up and running, capable of retrieving weather data from the provider. The SunOnly project began to take off.

About Me

My name is Eike Reinel, I am a graduate computer scientist and the developer of SunOnly. Alongside development, I also take care of everything else, including product management, distribution, marketing, social media, finance, etc., which makes me an “indie developer” or “solopreneur.”

I am passionate about being outdoors, whether in the mountains, by the sea, or somewhere in between.

We’ve been geocaching since 2009. In 2019, traveling in our “Blackbox” Hymercar Grand Canyon camper van became a major passion, providing the perfect addition for spontaneous geocaching tours.

In my previous career, I co-founded and served as Managing Partner (7 years as managing director) of a highly successful IT consulting firm. I also spent many years as an Agile Coach and trainer, specializing in Scrum and Kanban for companies of various sizes, primarily large corporations.
